National Fraud Initiative (NFI)

  • What we’re doing

The National Fraud Initiative (NFI) is a biennial UK-wide counter-fraud exercise. It helps prevent and detect fraud by sharing and matching sets of data electronically. We lead the exercise in Wales. This report will set out results from the most recent NFI exercise, to March 2026.

    Why we’re doing it

Fraud and error continues to be a blight on public services and the NFI is an important part of the counter fraud landscape for public bodies. However, the success of the NFI relies on bodies investing time and effort to assess and review data matches effectively. Quantifying the overall impact also relies on bodies recording their outcomes. Our report will reflect on these themes.

    When we’ll report

    Autumn 2026.
