Biomass boilers in the NHS - Welsh Health Estates

28 May 2014 - 11:09am

Two new hospital developments in Wales are installing biomass boilers to provide heating and hot water services.

The developments are Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda at Llwynypia where a 1.2 MW boiler plant has been installed and at Ysbyty Alltwen in Porthmadog where an 880 kW boiler is to be used. Both installations are fuelled by woodchip sourced from local Welsh suppliers and, between them, the two hospitals will burn over 2,000 tonnes of woodchip per year. The fuel is regarded as carbon neutral and so it is estimated that carbon emissions could be reduced by in excess of 2,300 tonnes per year compared to equivalent gas fired boilers. Further new hospital developments in Gwent, now under construction, will also use biomass boilers to provide their heating and hot water needs.
