Sustaining value for money in the police service - Briefing paper for the Public Accounts Committee

1 Sep 2010 - 10:00am

This briefing has been produced for the Public Accounts Committee and summarises the Wales specific outputs of our recent UK-Wide report in value for money in the police service – delivered jointly by the Wales Audit Office, the Audit Commission and the Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Constabulary (HMIC).

The briefing notes a Welsh police spend of  £697 million in 2008-09, some 51 per cent more in real terms than in 1997-98, compared with the 47 per cent increase in spending across England and Wales and states that savings for Wales’ four police authorities could be estimated as between £24 million and £35 million per year.
