The Council has over the past eight years installed over three Mega Watts of biomass boilers at 11 sites.
The sites are mainly schools that used to run on coal. Additionally, an environmental centre in Aberdare was also part of the project. This measure has proven to be highly effective. This scheme has now been extended to include the accommodation block.
Benefits arising from this initiative are the following:
• Vastly reduced carbon emissions, due to the use of a renewable source.
• Better use of caretakers' time
• Financial benefits in terms of fossil fuel price levels
The early schemes were partly funded (25 per cent) by the National Lottery, administered through Welsh Biofuels in Bridgend. Recovery of the outlay of funds are expected to be fully recovered. Installation costs have been between £50,000 for a single boiler to £120,000 for larger twin boiler installations.
